RMS Titanic: 109 Years On - Shorts
Today is April 15, 2021, as of writing I mean. April has been a very 'messy' month for a long time. From the start of the Civil War to the San Francisco Earthquake, it hasn't been 'smooth sailing' for this month. Actually that was an unintentional pun. Today, 109 years ago, was the day the now infamous RMS Titanic supposedly hit an Iceberg and sank. Now, true viewers of this blog will know that I have friend called Andy who is an expert in this area. He also has a YouTube Channel which I have linked down below twice. Go check him out! Anyways let's get into the history of the Titanic...
The RMS Titanic was first commissioned by White Star Line, a cruise company in 1908. The Titanic began construction off the coast of Belfast in Northern Ireland before being completed in 1912. The Ship sailed and made its way down to Southampton, UK to load passengers on its maiden voyage to New York. The ship went to Cherbourg, France then Cobh, Ireland before finally heading to NYC. 5 days later, the ship supposedly hit an Iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912. At the time, the Titanic was the largest ship in the world and could carry roughly 3,500 passengers. The ship was 269.1m (882 ft 9 in) in Length and 53.3m (175 ft) in Height. White Star Line spent roughly $140 Million (2021 dollars) building this ship. Its important to note that the owner of the Titanic, White Star Line, built 2 other ships. The RMS Olympia and the HMHS Britannic. Olympia was a cruise ship which lasted 20 years before being scrapped while the Britannic was a hospital ship which lasted for a year before sinking. All this led to White Star Line filing for bankruptcy in 1934, merging with another cruising company. On the night of the disaster, the Titanic hit an Iceberg, I won't get to the details of how it sank and what part broke of first or second but in the end, only roughly 700 people survived.
In 1997, David Cameron released his debut film 'Titanic' a stupidly long film that took the world by storm. Now obviously, some if not most acts were not resemblance of the real Titanic but hey,! That's Hollywood! So now, people are asking, will there ever be a Titanic 2? A sequel has yet to be released but as for the ship, no. Despite talks by a Chinese Company on the ship, it is definitely not going to be a thing, not in the long run.
