Fukushima: 10 Years On - Shorts

Fukushima: 10 Years On - Shorts
March 11 2011, in the town of Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture in Japan sits a small nuclear power plant. But before we get to that, let's rewind a couple of days back. It is February 2011 and a few miles out from Fukushima lies the Pacific Ocean where an earthquake had just brewed, launching a huge tsunami straight for Japan. This was the Tohoku Earthquake, the 4th most powerful earthquake in the World since records began in 1900. It had a magnitude of 9.1 and rocked the coastal parts of Japan. This was the cause of the now notorious Fukushima Disaster, a disaster that still lives on till this day. Anyway, now let's get back to the story.

The Overview of Fukushima, Simplifed
...sits a small nuclear plant then the ground below the plant began to shake. Now before continuing, authorities had warned a few days before March 11 that something was going to happen. It was a matter of the response. Which the Japanese kind of fluked. The result? Three out of the six nuclear reactors failed which caused massive explosions and meltdowns. After around three months, 1 died and 16 were injured. The International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES) classified the disaster as a serious accident or level 7 (the highest level).

The Aftermath of Fukushima
Let's first compare the aftermath of the  Chernobyl Disaster and the Fukushima Disaster. First of, we actually improved our response. With more deaths in Chernobyl than Fukushima. Alright, so could Fukushima be avoided? I obviously cannot judge but if I was asked this, I'd say yes. The natural disaster part could not but the disaster could have been! Reports by various committees investigated the disaster and today, 10 years on from the earthquake and the disaster, the nuclear disaster is now a scar on Japan and Fukushima. Part of our history now.

Farren's Opinion Corner
Our world has been shaped by this idea of Nuclear Power. Many countries have adopted the use of this type of energy, some have even developed missiles from it. But there is a problem, actually a few. First is the idea of Nuclear Waste and the second I believe is the idea of Nuclear Safety. We only discovered this 'nuclear' thing around 100 years ago so its relatively new. My suggestion is the idea of a globally runners organisation to set standards for Nuclear Safety. I'll call it the United Nuclear Safety Organisation or (UNSO). It will review and set standards for safety to hopefully avoid such disasters. Yes, I am aware of (NWMO) or the Nuclear Waste Management Organisation. Or have both the two merge and create a new branch of the United Nations which I would call the United Nations Organisation for Nuclear Concerns or (UNONC). Anyway, it's been a long Opinion Corner Shorts.

Happy Reading!

*To those who lost their lives in the Nuclear Disaster, we are saddened by the disaster that sadly took place and wish all including citizens of Fukushima Prefecture a fruitful life ahead after the nuclear disaster.
