The Trouble with Timetables

The Trouble with Timetables   Over the course of my 6 years in the education system. I learned a few things. But there is one learning point that will stay in my heart forever. That is the ineffectiveness of Timetables. The ones used in schools which dictate exactly how your time is spent for about half of your day, 5 days a week. So in this article, I’m going to explain the ineffectiveness of timetables and two solutions to replace it. I will call my solutions the Homework Model (HM)  and the Subject-Orientated Timetable (SOT) . So let’s start with why the current version of a timetable sucks. (Disclaimer: Both solutions proposed have not been tested or experimented in any way at all) The Ineffectiveness of the Timetable  It’s unclear how the current version of the Timetable was invented but it was probably around the time railways came about. When you had trains, you needed timetables to dictate what time trains ran. This, along with the evolution of time, created the f...

Farren hates the new NDP Song

Farren talks about the NDP Song Editor's Note: All Swearing has been Bleeped. Excuse the patriotism. All comments towards the song is based solely on my opinion on them. If you feel pissed at my comments. I apologize   To those unaware of what 'NDP' is, allow me to explain it in the most brief way possible. You see in Singapore, we celebrate our so called nation's birthday which we call 'National Day' on the 9th of August. And to celebrate this birthday, we have what we call National Day Parade (NDP). To put it simply, it's basically a 4-hour long version of the NFL Half-Time Show but the army, air force and navy are included. Now every NDP, a sort of theme song is written for the NDP. This tradition of writing a NDP song has been going on since 1984 with the release of 'Stand Up for Singapore' and then 'Count on Me Singapore' in 1986 followed by 'We Are Singapore' and 'One People, One Nation, One Singapore.' in 1987 and 1990 ...

An Apologetic Announcement

An Apologetic Announcement   Hi again. It’s Farren and I really hoped that I wouldn’t post this but it has to be done. A few days ago I wrote that I will post 30 days of short minute-long articles but unfortunately, my current schedule has been pathetically tight and squished. So here’s the deal. All 30 snippets of Farren’s QuickTake will be found on Farren’s Personal Corner in December rather than September. But instead of 30 articles, I will do 12 Days of Christmas with Farren. For each of the days, I will share about an interesting experience that I have, well, experienced.  Another reason is because for the past 2 months, I am working on a small side project that will, soon, turn into a 3-part article that will be released during the September Holidays. Seriously, I have never spent so long working on a few articles. I will try not to spoil but it’s basically a big spaghetti mess between some of Sir Ken Robinson, Finland, Academics and a bit too much Money.  And final...
